Where: Guiton Hall, Oceano Dunes Visitors Center- 555 Pier Ave, Oceano, CA 93445
Description: Jesse will discuss how our semi-arid climate hydrology in the central coast of California works, how land use and cover changes since European contact have altered this cycle, and what we can do locally to make our landscapes more resilient to the “drought and deluge” cycle in California.
About the Speaker: Jesse is a central coast transplant. He grew up on a farm Northwest of Chicago but a few visits to the central coast at a young age convinced him he had to return for college. He studied his undergraduate in Sociology at UCSB. After college he traveled around Latin America before arriving in Costa Rica where he lived for 5 years. There he worked in rural community based sustainable development and nature conservation. Later he received a Master’s degree in Sustainable Development from the University of Costa Rica. After his graduate program he returned to his beloved Alta California. For the last several years he has been working as a land steward and restorationist for the family farm and completed a permaculture design course in Santa Cruz. In his free time, he likes to hike, plant trees, and think about systems and how they shape our world.
