Description: Soils are diverse, complex, natural wonders that support biodiversity and ecosystem services, but are often overlooked. In this Mind Walk, we will explore the processes that lead to the formation of unique soil types. I will describe how scientists study how soils form, function, and change over time. I will also show you where you can explore soils around San Luis Obispo County, what to look for when you find them, and how to capture soil memories.
About the Speaker: Dr. Yamina Pressler is a soil scientist and educator who studies soil ecology in coastal California bioregions and advocates for soil conservation and care. She is an Assistant Professor of Soil Science and Restoration Ecology at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo where she teaches a variety of soil science and ecology courses and leads the Coastal Soil Horizons & Ecology Lab (C-SHEL). Yamina received a Ph.D. in Ecology from Colorado State University, and B.S. in Environmental Management and Protection from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. She can often be found exploring soils, looking for birds, and drawing along the coast. She also writes about soil science and conservation topics for anyone curious about soils.
