At first Oso Flaco Lake might not look like the kind of place where you can experience several different landscapes in one short walk, but follow the trail and the scenery quickly changes.
Located within the Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area, Oso Flaco Lake Natural Area begins with a path surrounded by Arroyo willows and Wax myrtles. The trail eventually reaches a boardwalk that crosses the dunes and leads toward the ocean.
This stark transition is one of the most interesting parts of the walk. One minute you are surrounded by green vegetation near the lake, and not long after you are walking through the sandy dunes with the Pacific Ocean ahead.
The area is also home to a variety of plants and wildlife. The dunes provide a habitat for the Western Snowy Plover, along with plants such as Silver dune lupine, Coyote bush, Deerweed and Dunes paintbrush.
Eventually, the boardwalk opens up to an ocean-viewing platform with views across San Luis Bay. Oso Flaco Lake proves itself as a good reminder of how many different environments can exist within the same coastal landscape.
Oso Flaco is also a quieter alternative to some of the more developed beaches in the area. The trail gives visitors a chance to slow down and pay attention to the smaller parts of the landscape, from plants around the lake to dunes along the coast.
That is just part of what makes the area worth protecting. The lake, wetlands, dunes and beach are all connected, and each supports a different form of life. Oso Flaco’s unique and diverse landscape remains home to native plants like Tules and Cattails, freshwater fish and even threatened shorebirds like the Western Snowy Plover.
So if you are looking for a short outdoor trip in SLO County, Oso Flaco Lake is worth adding to the list. You can start beside a lake, walk through the dunes and end with the ocean all in one trip.
