Description:From the estuary to the deep offshore waters, the central coast is a place of fascinating marine ecosystems. The ocean is a vital part of everyday life on the central coast in myriad ways; influencing the weather, supporting livelihoods, providing a place for recreation, and more. Understanding the past and present ocean conditions is crucial to assessing how future ocean change will affect the central coast community. This talk will explore the interconnected physical, biological, chemical, and geological ocean processes that occur off the central coast, as well as how scientists study this region and the effects of climate change.
About the Speaker: Shannon McClish is a PhD candidate in Chemical Oceanography at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She researches how different ocean processes shape the distribution of carbon, oxygen, and nutrients in the ocean that are important for ocean organisms and Earth’s climate. Shannon grew up in Morro Bay and is continually inspired by the beauty and complexity of the central coast region.
